arapaima[Need advice]Sump filter media for Aro
Dear Bros,Can help to judge my sump filter media built for Aro whether it is good to go?
Ive manage to build wet/dry system for the bio balls, underneath is 4 x ceramic bio rings. Followed by 2nd chamber 1 bag of charcoal and 2 box of bio rings that has more surface. 3rd chamber will be volcano rocks.
Appreciate your kind opinions on the design.
And below is the whole tank + sump:

If you can afford, go for better media. Will help your tank a lot in the long run.
What is the charcoal meant?
>I prefer to remove off the bio balls lower the basket to let it sit on the
ceramic bio rings and also the bag of charcoal (unless you want to remove smell or medication)
can add in more medias.
>Better media as in which kind of media? any example? Is the media not enough? I try to get the bio tube house but the lfs said no more stocks atm. He recommend me to take the volcano rocks as it has two purpose, provide minerals and serve as bio filter because of the surface area.
My tank size is 4ft x 1.2ft x 1.8ft
The Charcoal = activated carbon.
>Is this a bare tank with a D.I.Y overflow? A few questions:
1) How small/large is your sump? Looks like only 2ft to me
2) How small/large is your aro
3) How many fishes is going to be in the tank besides the aro?
I will not go into the media discussion as everyone will have their own preference belief but I would strongly encourage you to do 3 things.
1) Go arrange your media. Dont be lazy to just throw all inside the chamber. Arrange them carefully. For rings, place them all sideways over one another so that the hollow side is horizontal not vertical. Reason: Water will always find the least resistance passage to travel thus your arrangement actually allows many chambers for water to rush thru minimising flowing through the media. If having a problem because of the bags used, can go daiso get those square/rectangular boxes with holes on all sides for easy neat stacking one above the other
2) If you keep aro, you will need a basic rule of thumb of 2.5ft width so as to accommodate the fish growing longer and easier for it to turn else if will be a struggle for the aro to turn in the future
3) Lastly, if you can, change to a larger sump. Never hurt to have more medias and better water for your aro. Remember, you take care of the water, the water will take care of your fish.
I am running a 5ft tank with a 4.75ft sump. Only 1 aro fyi
>I agree with HaoHaoRao big bro,
1.2ft is too narrow for the aro to turn in the future. Do at least have 2ft.
If not, i believe the aro will have open grills.
If you really want to rear, then i think you need to include another addition filtration system.

Then he asked me what fish Im going to keep and how big is my tank. So told him the details, and he bring the 2ft sump to me. Well im not sure, but he can sell me a bigger sump with more profit instead.
2) How small/large is your aro Im going to keep a 6 inch blue base. Maybe can consider to switch to a bigger tank after 2 years. I will update the blue base picture once I get it this coming december.
3) How many fishes is going to be in the tank besides the aro? not going to mix the fish. So only 1 aro.
Duly noted on the bio rings. I will arrange it accordingly.
I have exceeded my budget for the sump bro, never knew the media can be so costly to buy in one time.
Thank you for the advise, really appreciate it.

Their prices are sure to be better then LFS since they make them. Maybe check with the tank makers available rather than from LFS?

Now you are more experienced in expenditure for MEDIA alone lol, next time you can plan better. MAny bros here like me, one shot spend more than 1k on media alone in a new tank. Its not uncommon my friend
Next round when you HAVE to change to a larger tank, do your math research first. Normal 5ft tank sump + media easily 3k+........so now you can start saving

>As a lot of Bros suggested, your current tank size is not suitable for keeping aros in the Long run because the width is not wide enough. You can keep fishes like angel fish, which is vertically taller.
